The Rye Boys Tennis team fell to Scarsdale for the second time this season on Wednesday, April 22, losing 5-2. The Garnets battled hard against one of the area’s top teams, but watched as the Raiders won most of the key points in the close matches to take the match.
“There is so much potential with this team that it is frustrating to lose by such a small margin,” Head Coach Sue Dickson told MyRye.com. “We need to turn it around in high pressure situations and lock in and focus for the remainder of the season.”
Henry Groves at first singles and Carter Hudspeth and Nate Bertisch and fourth doubles both won their matchups in straight sets, with Groves winning 6-2, 6-0 and the pairing taking their match 7-5, 6-3. While Scarsdale excelled in the other singles formats, their wins in doubles were much harder to come by. Doubles 1-3 all went to supertiebreakers, With the raiders eventually earning all three victory points.
Lou Kim-Reuter and Filip Glitterstam at first doubles fell in the tiebreak set by two points, as did Philip Karajannis and Dylan Smailes at third doubles. Luke Gordon and Xavier Morell lost by three in the supertiebreaker.
“Despite the overall score of 5-2, Scarsdale won by a few crucial points,” Dickson reflected. “Rye’s last three losses have all been close.”
After starting the year 4-0, the Garnets are now 5-3. They will have a good chance to get back on track in their next match against Edgemont on Friday, April 24, at 4:30pm.
