This is Asclepias purpurascens (Purple Milkweed) in the MyRye.com garden. Asclepias purpurascens is listed as a threatened species in New York State.
This plant has been in the garden for about three years and struggled the last two. It seems to have finally come into its own this season. It serves as a larval host plant for monarch, swallowtail and other butterflies and for various native bees. Our Asclepias purpurascens plants are in a sunny drier area.
Various native milkweed plants are terrific pollinator plants. The more common milkweeds are Asclepias incarnata (Swamp Milkweed) and Asclepias tuberosa (Butterflyweed).
