Storms swept through Rye this weekend, blowing away any plans for a sunny Fourth of July. Instead of getting outside to grill, go to the beach, and watch the fireworks, severe thunderstorms forced celebrations to halt as people took shelter inside.

The storm on Saturday night left more than 500 people in Rye without power and downed tree branches caused road obstructions in many areas. Ridge Street between High Street and Hillside Avenue Forest Avenue between Oakland Beach Avenue and Rye Beach Avenue Old Post Road between Boston Post Road and North Street Manursing Way toward the beach clubs were all closed on Sunday as power restoration and road clearing efforts took place.

Roads continued to be blocked off on Monday, including Ridge Street between High Street and Hillside Avenue Manursing Way to the beach clubs Forest Avenue from Grace Church Street to Manursing Avenue Forest Avenue from Elmwood Avenue to Oakland Beach Avenue Brevoort Lane from Rye Road to Lake Road. Heavy rain persisted throughout the day, leading the City of Rye to issue a flash flood warning.

While the worst of the storm now seem to have passed through, work is still being done to reopen roads and restore power.
