The Rye Boys Soccer team’s elite offense showed itself again on Thursday, September 10, as the Garnets crushed Arlington 5-0. Rye scored four times within the first 18 minutes of play – their second four-goal first half through three games – to leave no doubt about the result against their AAA opponent.
“We scored in a variety of manners and our overall defending was again strong, so the coaching staff was of course pleased with all of that,” head coach Jared Small told MyRye.com. “That said, we got complacent after scoring early and lost sight of our identity. We rediscovered it as the second half unfolded and we introduced some new players onto the field, and a 5-0 result against a AAA opponent who owns more state soccer championships than any other Section 1 program is always something to be proud of.”
Felix Wismer scored the first two goals from a combined one foot away from the goal line, first nudging a loose ball into the cage with his torso in the 4th minute and then subtly (and accidentally) deflecting a try from Kasen Scarperi in the 6th, while only onside due to an Arlington defender positioned near his keeper on the goal line.
James Hayashi also scored twice, first depositing a rebound off the crossbar and then finishing a header pass from the center of the 6 yard box. With more than an hour still left in the match, Rye was already outshooting Arlington 7-0 and led by four.
The offense slowed considerably, as Small noted, but the defensive line and goalkeeper Will Alexander kept the Admirals off the board.
“[Alexander’s] vocal leadership and strong takes in the air helped Rye manage the match,” Small said of his junior keeper, who is now 3-0 with zero goals allowed to start the 2026 season. “Andrey Chernov, Filip Glitterstam, Cole Furber, Christian Hofmann, and CJ Loizeaux all contributed to the clean sheet in their roles at defenders.”
Connor Dehmer scored the fifth goal in the 72nd minute to cap off the surprising demolition of a highly regarded AAA opponent.
Rye (3-0) will look to stay rolling in another non-league showdown with Keio Academy on Wednesday, September 16. The road contest begins at 5:00pm. Replay the win vs Arlington here.
