Scammers like email and they like snail mail too.
Rye PD says it thwarted suspected mail theft from a mailbox in front of the U.S. Post Office at 41 Purdy Avenue in downtown Rye. It is known that scammers will remove mail from a mailbox and use the paper checks and other sensitive information from letters to conduct scams and ripoffs.
On Thursday, September 10, 2026, at approximately 6:00 a.m., a Rye PD officer on patrol observed a suspected mail theft from a mailbox in front of the U.S. Post Office at 41 Purdy Avenue. The officer observed an individual run from the mailbox, cross the street, and enter a BMW X7. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, which fled from the area. A pursuit was initiated but was subsequently terminated due to the vehicle’s reckless operation and existing road conditions.
Rye PD reminds residents to take precautions when mailing checks or other sensitive items. Whenever possible, residents are encouraged to bring outgoing mail directly inside the post office rather than leaving it in an exterior collection box. Residents who observe suspicious activity around mailboxes or post offices are encouraged to contact police.
