Frederick Ellingham

Frederick Ellingham was born on April 16, 1923, and was a lifelong Rye resident. He and his family lived at 50 Grapal Street. Frederick graduated from Rye High School in 1940, after which he enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served there during WWII.

Ellingham was a member of the 8th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division, the first unit to land on Utah Beach in Normandy on June 6, 1944. After their successful D-Day landing, the regiment advanced to the port of Cherbourg where they were in active combat for 22 days. The 4th Infantry Division sustained over 5,450 casualties, including Ellingham who was killed on June 19, 1944. 

After his death, Ellingham was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic service, which was presented to his mother. Ellingham is buried in The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. More on Ellingham.
