A license plate reader in a Rye police officer’s patrol vehicle has led to an arrest of a 60 year old man on multiple fraud related charges.

On Monday, October 13, 2025, Rye PD arrested Ming Wu, 60, of Flushing, New York, on multiple fraud-related charges, to include Unlawful Possession of Personal Identification in the Third Degree, a Class A misdemeanor, Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument 3rd Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor, False Personation, a Class A Misdemeanor, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor.

A Rye police officer was alerted by his patrol vehicle’s license plate reader that the 2025 Toyota Rav4 occupied by Wu on Purchase Street had a suspended registration. Wu was placed under arrest and his vehicle was inventoried prior to being impounded. During the inventory, several New York State Driver’s licenses were discovered not belonging to Wu. Wu also identified himself as Qingyong Ren via a New York State Driver’s License to the officer during their initial interaction. Wu was found to be in possession of an unknown crystal substance as well as a spring assisted knife at the time of his arrest.

Wu was processed and then released with a desk appearance ticket dated for him to return to Rye City Court on Tuesday October 28, 2025 at 9:00am to answer to his charges. Rye PD reminds you that booking charges are merely accusations and the defendant(s) are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
