City of Rye Police Department Sergeant Michael Larkin retired on Monday, February 23, 2026, after more than four decades of service.  Larkin is a lifetime Rye resident who grew up on Smith Street, and a 1983 graduate of Rye High School. He received a ceremonial walkout at Rye PD headquarters on Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s been fabulous working here,” Larkin told MyRye.com on Wednesday. “I started working here when I was 19 years old as a Rye Town Park Ranger.”

Sergeant Larkin began his career with the City of Rye Police Department in 1985, serving in several capacities before becoming a sworn police officer. From 1985 to 1986, he worked as a bay constable and a police enforcement officer (PEO), and from 1985 to 1988, he proudly served as an auxiliary police officer. In 1988, he left the Auxiliary unit to pursue a full-time law enforcement career as a police officer with the City of Peekskill Police Department.

“I spent six years in Peekskill at my first job,” said Larkin. “Then I got a call from Commissioner [Anthony] Schembri, the first commissioner here, and he said do you want to come back to Rye.”

On February 16, 1994, Larkin returned to the City of Rye Police Department as a police officer. He served as a patrol officer, the village officer, and the marine unit supervisor before being promoted to sergeant on July 2, 2008, a position in which he served with distinction until his retirement. He plans to now split his time between Rye and the west coast of Florida.

“Throughout his career, Sergeant Larkin exemplified dedication and service to the community,” said Patrol Lieutenant Al Hein. “His contributions to the City of Rye Police Department and the residents he served have left a lasting impact on the department and the community.  Throughout his career he has earned multiple life saving and exceptional service awards.  His leadership, experience, and expertise will be greatly missed.”
