Rye Schools Restricts Access to Student Portal, Calling It a Student Distraction and Source of Stress

Rye schools are trying to make the school day less stressful for students. The school system sent an email to parents saying it will restrict access to the student portal during the day to prevent students from checking grades having a related back and forth with their parents during the school day.

"Unfortunately, we have increasingly seen that constant access to the portal has become a distraction to students because they are frequently checking their grades or GPAs, discussing them with classmates, and communicating with their parents/guardians about grades and assignments during the school day. Students also report that the portal creates a stressful environment during school hours," said the email from Rye schools.

"Dear RCSD Parents/Guardians:

We hope you and your families are enjoying the summer.

Communication about student progress is an important aspect of our family-school partnership. Over the past few years, the District’s PowerSchool Parent Portal website/app has provided instant access to students’ grades to parents/guardians and middle and high school students, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except when the portal is closed for report card generation.

Unfortunately, we have increasingly seen that constant access to the portal has become a distraction to students because they are frequently checking their grades or GPAs, discussing them with classmates, and communicating with their parents/guardians about grades and assignments during the school day. Students also report that the portal creates a stressful environment during school hours.

In alignment with our work with Challenge Success, and in an effort to reduce student stress and to eliminate in-school distractions, beginning September 2019, students/parents will only be able to access student schedules in the Parent Portal from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. during weekdays. The other information in the Parent Portal will be unavailable during those hours. All information on the Parent Portal will remain open all day on weekends, and during the hours before and after school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact either one of us.

Sincerely,

Patricia Taylor , Principal, Rye High School Principal,

Dr. Ann Edwards, Rye Middle School"
