Where I Work: Rye Country Day School’s New Head of School Randall Dunn

Where I Work showcases people who work in Rye. The feature was inspired in part by exploring how the pandemic has impacted our work environment and part by wanting to understand how and where people work inside the City of Rye.

Today we meet Rye Country Day School’s Head of School Randall Dunn. Dunn was named the new Head of School in October 2021 and began his work at RCDS on July 1st, 2022.

MyRye.com: What do you do?

Dunn: Head of School

Where do you work?

Dunn: I work at Rye Country Day School, which is a Pre-Kindergarten – Grade 12 independent school. My office is located at the heart of our campus in the Main Building. My office hallway is the Lower and Middle School thoroughfare, so I see a lot of activity daily! It reminds me of why I got into education: the people! The Main Building is always bustling with students, faculty, staff, and families. It’s invigorating.

Describe your desk and office.

Dunn: I feel a Head of School’s office should be a welcoming place where people can collaborate and share ideas. To that end, I have a large L-shaped couch for thoughtful conversations. On the coffee table, visitors will find pieces of a jigsaw puzzle–one of my favorite pastimes. Inevitably, each person who comes to my office ends up placing at least one piece in its place, and when the puzzle is done, it stands as a testament to teamwork.

I am also very proud of my student art collection that adorns the wall. I am consistently inspired by the incredible talent, creativity, and potential of students. Finally, I have a standing desk, which features a clay sculpture of an Ackee fruit, the national fruit of my home country, Jamaica.
