The #2 Rye Baseball team completed the dominant two-game sweep of #1 Walter Panas in the championship round of the Section 1 Class A tournament at SUNY Purchase on Sunday, June 1, winning game two 5-0. Senior right-hander Peter Davies pitched a no-hitter in the clinching game, piggybacking off of Jack Sheridan’s masterpiece in the morning tilt, to earn tournament MVP and engrave his name in Rye Baseball lore for years to come.

“There was really no pressure, because we already played an elimination game on Wednesday,” Head Coach Michael Bruno told MyRye.com after the celebration. “And Davies was the man… he just did fantastic.”

Rye entered the day needing to go 2-0 over the top-seeded Panthers to claim the championship, and did just that. They won the two contests by a combined score of 13-1 to take home the Class A championship trophy for the first time in twelve years (the “George Kirby year”).

The Garnets scored twice in the second inning from the bottom of their order, as Harry Ellis, Vinny Sculti, Lucas London, and Michael Talbott combined to all reach base in a row with two outs. The Garnets added another off a Jackson Pineault RBI in the fourth and then two more in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Ellis and Sculti setting the table once again. Rye’s 6-9 hitters outclassed Panas’ entire lineup throughout the fourteen innings, especially in the afternoon clincher.

Rye (22-4) keeps their unbelievable season alive, and will play next Saturday, June 7, in upstate New York. The exact location and opponent is still TBD, but it will be the winner from a different section in either Troy or the Syracuse area.
