Obituary - Margaret SweeneyMargaret Toohy “Peggy” Sweeney passed away peacefully in Rye, NY at the age of 91 on September 18, 2025, with her family by her side, just one week after her husband, Robert J. Sweeney, also passed away.

Born in Larchmont in 1934 to John J. Toohy and Loretta Hughes Toohy, Peggy and her four siblings moved to Rye in 1935. She graduated from Resurrection School and Rye High School. Peggy graduated from the College of New Rochelle in 1955 and later received an MS degree in Elementary Education from Fordham University in 1959.

Peggy taught 2nd grade at Midland (Annex) School in Rye. After marriage and starting a family, she taught pre-K for 10 years at Rye Country Day School. Peggy was a dedicated community volunteer who supported Cub and Girl Scouts, Midland and Rye High School and was a CCD teacher, lector, and Eucharistic Minister at the Church of the Resurrection.

Peggy married Robert J. Sweeney of Larchmont in 1958. They enjoyed 66 wonderful years living in Rye together. Bob and Peggy were blessed with four children: John (Linda) of Concord, MA; Katharine of Rye, NY; Margaret of Rye, NY; and Eileen of Houston, TX, along with three grandchildren: John C., Theodore R., and Anna R. Sweeney.

Peggy was predeceased by her husband Bob one week before her passing. She was also predeceased by her parents, her elder brothers J. Thomas and Rev. Monsignor William J. Toohy, her sister Mary T. Hyson, and her twin brother R. Peter Toohy.

A joint wake for Bob and Peggy will be held at the Graham Funeral Home in Rye, NY on Tuesday, September 23 from 4pm – 7pm and a joint funeral mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye on Wednesday, September 24 at 10am. Burials will be private.
