The driver of a stolen vehicle hit a 42 year old resident driving a second vehicle on Saturday while attempting to evade Rye police.
An Acura RDX passed a Rye Police Department patrol car on Saturday, September 13 at 11:45am on Forest Avenue in the area of Apawamis Avenue. The patrol car’s license plate reader (LPR) alarmed, advising the officer the vehicle license plate was coming back as reported stolen. Police reported the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed and struck a 42 year old male resident driving another vehicle in the intersection of Midland Avenue and Apawamis Avenue. No injuries were reported.
Due to the heavy civilian presence at the Rye Recreation Center (youth soccer), the police officer backed off the pursuit and the stolen car continued into Port Chester. Eventually, Rye PD found the stolen car abandoned on Leonard Street next to the Dunkin Donuts in Port Chester (just past Home Depot and next to Port Chester Seafood).
Rye police said “The officer rightfully so did not want to engage the in a high speed pursuit through Rye on a Saturday afternoon for at the time was only a property crime (stolen car)”.
The Acura RDX was towed to the Rye PD impound and processed. There are no suspect at this time. According to police, video from the Dunkin Donuts shows two suspects wearing hoods and masks exiting the vehicle and running towards Midland Avenue in Port Chester. The vehicle itself and the Connecticut license plate on the vehicle were both reported stolen to the NYPD in two separate incidents.
