The Rye Boys Tennis team hardly had to break a sweat against John Jay-Cross River on Tuesday, April 28, winning 7-0. The Garnets as a team lost just one set in the seven matchups in their second consecutive win since their midseason struggles.
“A good portion of the game of tennis is composure and how tough or solid you can be mentally,” Head Coach Sue Dickson said after the game. “It is important to believe and achieve. I saw that today from everyone.”
Top to bottom in singles, Rye was dominant. Henry Groves, Luke Gordon, and Marcos Becker all won in straight sets, losing only a total of six games between the three of them. Doubles went mostly similarly, with the first, third, and fourth pairings all winning in straight sets. The second doubles team of brother Timothy and Xavier Morell split their first two sets 6-1, 3-6, and won the tiebreak 10-7. Xavier had to battle a face injury after being struck by an errant shot, digging in to complete the supertiebreaker victory.
Considering all seven matchups together, Rye won 81 games and John Jay won just 17. Rye also won the only tiebreaker 10-7.
The Garnets (7-3) have a chance to stretch their win streak to three matches later today, April 29, against crosstown rival Rye Country Day at 4:30pm.
