This past weekend was a busy one for Section One Tennis, including nine tennis players from the Rye Boys Varsity high school team competing individually for a final time this spring. Sophomore singles player Henry Groves and a doubles team of senior captain Nicolas Echlov and freshman Filip Glitterstam all earned All-Section recognition, becoming the first trio of Garnet athletes to achieve this feat in the same season in more than a decade.

Groves won two matches on Sunday, May 19, beating John Jay’s John and Matthew Marchini successively. The two brothers combined for only three game victories across four sets/two matches as Rye’s sophomore dominated. Groves’ next match is today, Monday, at 4:30pm at Harrison High School.

All three doubles teams Rye sent to Harrison last weekend won their first matchups on Saturday morning, but only Echlov and Glitterstam are still alive. They play next at the same time and place as Groves. Winners from those singles and doubles matches advance to the section semi-finals, which take place tomorrow, Tuesday, May 21.

The other two singles players coach Sue Dickson sent to play over the weekend were sophomore Luke Gordon and freshman Lou Kim-Reuter. Both boys won in the first round, but fell to their second opponents. The other two doubles teams at the tournament were Matthew Templeman/Alex Gordon and Henry Bagley/Henry Paul. Templeman and Gordon won their second match to advance to a game on Sunday, but fell there to a Mamaroneck duo. Bagley and Paul lost in round two on Saturday afternoon.
