Brendan McCole is a Gaelic footballer who plays fullback for St Naul’s in County Donegal and the Donegal senior county team. Known for his athleticism, discipline, and leadership, McCole has emerged as one of the most dependable defenders in inter-county football.
Early Life
Brendan McCole was born in Rye, New York, and lived there until just before his ninth birthday. His family then relocated to Mountcharles, a village in County Donegal, Ireland. It was in Donegal that he was first introduced to Gaelic football, having previously played basketball while growing up in Rye. At age sixteen, Brendan experienced the tragic loss of his only sibling, his brother Kara. He has spoken openly about how Gaelic football became a source of strength and healing during that difficult time.
Club Career
McCole plays his club football with St. Naul’s in Donegal. Initially a halfback, he transitioned to the fullback position and quickly became a defensive anchor for the team. He played a key role in St. Naul’s victory in the 2019 Donegal Intermediate Football Championship, starting at fullback in the final.
College Career
Brendan attended Dublin City University (DCU), where he studied Education and Training and later completed a Master’s degree in Business Management. While at DCU, he captained the university’s Gaelic football team to a Sigerson Cup victory in 2020. Under his leadership, DCU conceded no goals throughout the tournament, and McCole was named Sigerson Footballer of the Year for his outstanding performance.

Inter‑County Career with Donegal
McCole made his senior inter-county debut for Donegal in the 2019 Championship against Kerry. By 2022, he had become a mainstay in the team, starting in every game of the National Football League and the Ulster Championship. He is widely regarded as Donegal’s top man-marker and has been tasked with marking elite forwards such as Kerry’s David Clifford, often holding them to minimal impact.
His consistent performances have been instrumental in Donegal’s recent success, including back-to-back Ulster Senior Football Championship titles in 2024 and 2025 and a National Football League Division 2 title in 2024. He was named to The Sunday Game Team of the Year in 2025 and received All-Star nominations in both 2023 and 2024.
