The Rye Girls Squash team suffered their first loss of the 2025 season on Wednesday, December 3, falling to Hackley 5-2. Despite the defeat, Rye’s depth still flaunted its ability, as the Garnets won all seven “extra” matches.
“Although Rye lost the official top seven match score 2-5, they did win the day by winning 9 of 14 matches played, including all exhibitions,” Head Coach Tony Campbell explained after the match. “Junior captain Sam Coyne won her second match in a row in convincing fashion, showing her poise and match experience.”
Coyne swept her Hackley counterpart 11-4,11-5,11-6 to pick up a team point for the Garnets. She is now 2-0 individually on the season. Freshman Emma Crozier also earned her second consecutive sweep, taking down her opponent 11-3, 11-6, 11-3 in drama-free fashion. Crozier has won all six games she has played so far.
Since both Hackley and Rye have larger rosters than just seven players apiece, the two schools agreed to play seven extra exhibition matches that did not count towards the final score, but allowed everyone to get competitive action on Wednesday. Rye went 7/7 in the exhibitions, meaning in total, their players won nine of the 14 matches on the day. Thus, despite the official lost, the Garnets still showed off the depth of their program, which Campbell indicated before the season was one of his team’s biggest strengths. Clearly, he evaluated correctly.
After two road matches to open the 2026 season, Rye sits at 1-1. Their next matchup is scheduled for Wednesday, December 10, at MSquash Academy. The Garnets face Staples for a late-night 8:30pm start.
