The #1 Rye Girls Lacrosse team fell in heartbreaking fashion on Wednesday, June 4, losing the Section 1 Class C championship game 13-12 to the Nyack Red Hawks. The Garnets’ season ends in a wild game that featured six lead changes in the second half.

Caroline Doyle and Paige Tepedino scored in the first quarter, and Rye was able to stretch their advantage to 5-1 in the second quarter. That quickly disappeared, and after the frame ended at 5-5, Nyack took their first lead of the game in the third quarter, kickstarting a roller coaster of runs, momentum swings, and pure emotion.

Somers led 8-6, before Beau Whaling, Tepedino, and Doyle all scored before the third quarter ended to put Rye in front. Somers responded to lead 11-9. Rye took back a 12-11 advantage with 2:46 on the clock on a tally by usual playmaker Blake Sasse. Ultimately, Nyack’s last run was enough, as the Red Hawks put two past the Garnets’ defense before regulation expired to pick up the championship victory.

Whaling, Tepedino, and Doyle all recorded hat tricks in a remarkable three-woman show on offense.

The loss marks the end of the 2025 season for Head Coach Michelle Mason and her group, who went undefeated in league play and picked up clutch midseason wins over Conestoga, Suffern, and Yorktown. They dismantled almost every other team they faced en route to a final 14-5 record.
