Rick McCabe officially joined the mayoral race in Rye on Wednesday, making it a three way contest. McCabe, running as an independent, will face Democrat and sitting Councilman Josh Nathan and Republican and sitting Councilman Bill Henderson.

The news became “official” because the Westchester Board of Elections finally accepted McCabe’s nominating petitions. The petitions are the politically arcane act of collecting voter signatures to be accepted onto the ballot. The local Rye GOP, under the direction of its chair Mark Dellicolli, had filed objections to McCabe’s petitions in the hopes of invalidating his attempt to get his name on the ballot. This appears to be common sport – a local version of presidential hanging chad – but Dellicolli was notified by letter from the Board of Elections that his effort fell short and McCabe is now on the ballot.

“I’m glad this part of its over. And now the fun begins,” McCabe told MyRye.com. “It’s good to be through this phase and it’s a long way to November.”

Many of our readers have likely been greeted at their door over the years by a city council or school board candidate looking for their signature on a petition. Looking at the nominating petitions – who signed them and who circulated them – is a curious sport.

Take a look! We were able to gain access to the nominating petitions for the Rye candidate via a FOIL (freedom of information) request to the Board of elections. What do you see that is curious to you? Leave a comment or send us a tip.
