On a Monday night, a nightmare. On Friday, a blessing.
On Monday, July 28, a fire at Delicias Arellano (aka Midland Deli), a small family owned Mexican restaurant in Rye suffered a debilitating fire that has put the small business at-risk and out of commission for an unknown time period. Firefighters from the Rye FD were able to wrestle the fire under control in 45 minutes.
On Friday, August 1 – just four days later – those same firefighters returned to Delicias Arellano representing their Local 2029 Union and its nonprofit fundraising arm to present the Rendon family owners $1,000 towards the rebuilding of their business. Local 2029, the Rye FD union, has expanded its fundraising efforts recently while continuing to focus on “helping those who need it when they need it most” (see our profile Giving Rye: Meet Rye Professional Firefighters (Local 2029). The group had its annual fundraiser in March.
“Thankfully nobody was hurt,” said Rye FD Firefighter Sal Inguanti, president of The Rye Professional Firefighters Inc. (Local 2029), DBA 2029 Fundraising. “It is tough seeing people lose their possessions, but to lose your livelihood as well is twice as hard. We wish them well during this difficult time and hope we are able to start ordering food from them in the near future.“
“Your generosity and compassion mean the world to our family,” Delicias Arellano posted on social media . “Thank you for being true heroes on and off duty.”
Immediately after the fire, Delicias Arellano created an online fundraiser to help pay to rebuild its business. As of Saturday morning, August 9 the effort has raised $21,415 or 71% of its $30,000 goal.
Those interested can support the Delicias Arellano rebuilding fund.
