It took more than 48 minutes, but the Rye Field Hockey team topped John Jay-Cross River 3-2 in overtime on Saturday, October 4. The Garnets trailed 2-0 after the first quarter, but stormed back with relentless pressure for the rest of the game, which crescendoed with Liv Prata’s overtime winner with 59 seconds to play in the extra period.
Rye cut their early multi-goal deficit to 2-1 in the second quarter and tied it in the second half. The only reason they could not find the winner before regulation time ended was Wolves’ goalie McKenzie Ryder, who made 14 saves. Prata’s winner was her second goal of the game, and it was assisted by Beau Whaling, who also scored in regulation. The Whaling-Prata duo has highlighted Rye’s offense all season, and they came in clutch in the Saturday afternoon comeback effort.
The Garnets (9-1) have won six games in a row, and continue to thrive under first-year head coach Valerie Perkins. They will look to reach double-digit wins on Monday, October 6, as they host Suffern at 5:00pm at Nugent Stadium. Watch it here.
